After generations of sustaining themselves through traditional animal husbandry, young members of the Dhangar community in Bicholim are seeking reservation to help secure better educational and employment opportunities.

Dhangar families living in areas including Lakhere, Latambarse, Kudchire and surrounding parts of Dicholi taluka have traditionally depended on rearing cattle, buffaloes and goats for their livelihood.

While animal husbandry continues to remain an important source of income for the community, the younger generation is increasingly pursuing education and higher studies. With more youngsters aspiring to enter government and private-sector employment, members of the community say reservation has become an important demand.

Speaking to the media, Dhangar youth said their community has faced difficulties for generations and appealed to the authorities to address their demand for reservation and ensure greater opportunities for the younger generation.

The youth said they are determined to move beyond traditional livelihoods through education, professional opportunities and employment, but believe reservation would provide them with greater access to these opportunities.
