Goa recorded 1,602 snakebite cases over the last three years, but no fatalities were reported during the period, according to data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The figures show that an average of 534 snakebite cases were reported annually in Goa, translating to around 44 cases every month.

Nationally, India recorded 3,47,578 snakebite cases during the same three-year period. Despite the high number of incidents, 987 people lost their lives due to snakebites across the country.

Karnataka reported the highest number of snakebite deaths at 280, followed by West Bengal with 155, Tamil Nadu with 93, and Odisha with 83 fatalities.

In terms of snakebite cases, Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number with 51,774 cases, followed by Odisha with 41,822. Manipur reported the lowest number of cases at 372.

The Centre said it provides financial assistance and essential equipment to states for snakebite management. Funds are also allocated to train healthcare professionals in snakebite prevention, treatment, and management at state and district levels.

To strengthen the response to snakebite incidents, the Union Government launched the National Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Snakebite Envenoming in 2024. The Centre also supplies anti-snake venom to states based on case data reported through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP).
