​Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has recommended to Goa government to pay ₹20,000 in compensation to each of the five victims, including a 17-year-old minor, who were subjected to illegal detention and brutal assault inside the barracks of the Maina-Curtorim Police Station.

​The inquiry report, issued on August 26, 2026, by the GHRC, strongly condemned the actions of the errant police personnel, observing that such brutality severely erodes public faith in law enforcement.

​The matter was taken up suo motu by the Commission following a media report regarding custodial violence on the intervening night of June 6–7, 2026.

​According to the GHRC’s findings, the five victims—identified as Chetan Baswa, Ajit Soni, Vithal Rathod, Vaibhav Pednekar, and 17-year-old Yuvraj Dhamgay—were detained following a minor road dispute at Rawanfond Circle.

​Instead of lodging formal FIRs or making station diary entries, personnel at the Maina-Curtorim Police Station wrongfully confined the group in the male resting barracks between 10:30 PM on June 6 and 3:00 AM on June 7. Statements recorded from the victims and witness revealed that five police personnel physically assaulted the detainees, forced them to perform indecent acts, and demanded money in exchange for their release.

​Subsequent medical examinations at the South Goa District Hospital confirmed that the victims suffered multiple abrasions, bruises, tenderness, and swelling.

Police Sub-Inspectors Sanket S. Naik and Gaurav G. Naik, Head Constable Sameer J. Sudhir, and Police Constables Chetan C. Koli and Pundalik M. Parit—were placed under suspension in June 2026 pending departmental inquiry.

​Invoking the principle of vicarious liability, the GHRC has directed the Superintendent of Police (South) and the Police Inspector of Maina-Curtorim Police Station to pay ₹20,000 compensation to each victim within 30 days. The department remains at liberty to recover the disbursed amounts directly from the salaries of the guilty personnel once disciplinary proceedings conclude.

​The Commission has sought an action-taken report from the authorities on or before October 5, 2026.
