The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has found prima facie material indicating that five police personnel attached to the Maina-Curtorim Police Station wrongfully confined and allegedly assaulted five persons, including a 17-year-old, during an incident in June.

According to the Commission’s findings, the five individuals were allegedly detained overnight without an FIR, station diary entry or any other legal authority for their confinement. They were reportedly kept inside a police barrack, as the police station did not have a lockup facility.

The Commission also took note of medical records relating to the victims, which documented abrasions, bruises, tenderness and swelling, supporting allegations of physical assault.

The GHRC has recommended that the government provide compensation of Rs 20,000 each to the five victims.

The Commission has also sought a report detailing the disciplinary action proposed or initiated against the police personnel allegedly involved in the incident.
