The High Court has issued notices to the Election Commission of India and to the newly proposed "Goa Congress Party", in a petition filed by GPCC president Girish Chodankar, pleading to direct ECI to decide representations and objections raised against the proposed registration of "Goa Congress Party."

The petitioner contends that the name "Goa Congress Party" substantially borrows from "Goa Congress," the widely recognized colloquial and official name used by the GPCC across its public outreach and social media. He argues that adding the generic word "Party" does not sufficiently distinguish the new outfit and will cause confusion among voters.

According to the petition, the Congress party and Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao submitted three representations—dated 11 July, 27 July, and 2 August 2026—objecting to the public notice published by the applicant on 2 July 2026. The plea alleges that the ECI has remained arbitrarily silent and failed to decide on the objections.

With the term of the current Goa Legislative Assembly expiring in March 2027, the petitioner stressed the urgency of resolving nomenclature ambiguities to prevent voter manipulation and unfair vote-splitting.

The High Court has listed the matter for further hearing on 1 September 2026.
