A suspected two-wheeler thief allegedly died after being assaulted by a mob of more than 50 people at Nuvem in Salcete on August 27.
According to police, an unidentified man, aged around 30, was intercepted by an unlawful assembly on suspicion of being involved in the theft of a two-wheeler earlier that evening. He was allegedly assaulted with kicks and fist blows.
The injured man was subsequently shifted to the Casualty Department of South Goa District Hospital (SGDH), Margao, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Following the incident, Maina-Curtorim Police registered a case and have arrested three persons in connection with the assault. The stolen two-wheeler has also been recovered.
Police have deployed multiple teams to identify and apprehend other persons allegedly involved in the unlawful gathering and assault.
The identity of the deceased is yet to be established.
Goa Police have cautioned citizens against taking the law into their own hands and urged the public to hand over suspected offenders to the nearest police station or contact 112 for immediate assistance.
