AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge said the Goa Congress leadership will take the first decision on electoral alliances ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, with the final approval resting with the party's high command.

Kharge said the state unit would assess the political situation and decide whether an alliance was required before forwarding its recommendation to the central leadership.

He also stressed the need for unity within the Goa Congress, saying party leaders had assured him that they would fight the elections together.

Kharge took a swipe at the Goa government, alleging that the ruling dispensation was trying to frighten and suppress people. He said governments in a democracy should follow the principles of good governance and work towards improving administration rather than creating hostility with opposition parties.

The Congress president's comments come amid discussions among opposition parties in Goa over possible electoral understandings ahead of the Assembly polls.
