The Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) has put its proposed purchase of new electric buses on hold and decided to give priority to procuring diesel buses, KTCL Chairman and Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuenkar said.

Tuenkar said the decision was taken keeping in mind the increasing demand from passengers and the need to replace old buses, with the aim of providing better and more reliable transport services.

The KTCL currently has around 600 buses in its fleet, while another 48 buses operate in Panaji under the Smart City project.

As per the rules, buses completing 15 years are being phased out and replaced with new buses. Recently, KTCL inaugurated 10 new diesel buses, while another 30 new diesel buses are expected to be added to the fleet in the coming days.

Tuenkar said KTCL had earlier placed an order with a Hyderabad-based company for 550 electric buses. Of these, 26 electric buses have so far been received by the corporation.

With the increasing requirement for buses and the need to replace ageing vehicles, KTCL has now decided to temporarily keep the EV procurement proposal aside and focus on bringing in new diesel buses.
