The nationwide rollout of E20 petrol is prompting concerns among two-wheeler mechanics in Goa, particularly over its use in older motorcycles and scooters.

A local mechanic said his garage had recently received around five vehicles with complaints that he believes could be linked to the use of ethanol-blended petrol. He expressed concern that prolonged use of E20 fuel could affect certain older vehicles that were not designed for higher ethanol blends.

According to the mechanic, components such as rubber seals, gaskets and fuel lines in older fuel systems may be more vulnerable to ethanol-blended fuel. He advised owners to check their vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations and confirm whether their vehicles are compatible with E20 petrol.

The Centre has mandated the use of E20 petrol across India from April 2026. Government information has also acknowledged that some older vehicles could experience changes in mileage and performance, while certain BS-III vehicles may require replacement of rubber components.

The mechanic also questioned whether motorists with older vehicles should have been offered an alternative fuel with a lower ethanol content.
