The Directorate of Youth Affairs has launched a drug-free awareness campaign in Canacona, with a focus on educating young people about substance abuse and its consequences.
The campaign aims to engage youngsters through awareness programmes and discussions on the dangers associated with drug use. Organisers said that providing children with timely information and helping them understand the impact of substance abuse can play an important role in prevention.
Parents in rural areas have also raised concerns over the increasing availability of drugs beyond Goa’s traditional tourist belts, with reports of substances reaching village areas.
Goa’s status as a major tourist destination has also been cited as one of the factors contributing to concerns over the spread of drugs. Authorities are now focusing on awareness at the community level to prevent youngsters from falling into substance abuse.
As part of the initiative, experts and youth representatives are being involved in awareness sessions aimed at encouraging healthy choices among young people.
Psychologist Dr Ketaki Parob is among those participating in the campaign to address the psychological and social impact of substance abuse on youngsters.
