The recent shooting incident in Porvorim, in which two assailants allegedly attempted to murder Casino Majestic Director Shrinivas Nayak, has triggered a sharp political reaction, with the Opposition alleging that the law and order situation in Goa has completely collapsed.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said he has directed the DGP and senior police officials to conduct a detailed investigation and arrest the assailants at the earliest.
“This is the first time in my eight-year tenure that such an incident has occurred. Such an attack on a businessman is not appropriate, definitely not in a state like Goa,” Sawant said.
The Chief Minister said police have also been directed to ascertain the motive behind the attack and expressed confidence that the assailants would be arrested soon. He stressed that the government and police department would not tolerate such incidents.
Meanwhile, Goa Police have received “definite leads” in the Porvorim firing case, DGP Alok Kumar said. Several teams, including the Crime Branch, are working on the leads, with the investigation extending both within and outside Goa.
The DGP said different possible motives are being examined, while senior officers, including the DIG and IG, are continuously monitoring the investigation.
“We will be successful in cracking the case very soon,” Kumar said, while declining to reveal further details, stating that doing so could compromise the investigation.
The police have taken the incident seriously and stepped up security measures, particularly with the Goa Legislative Assembly session set to commence on Monday. The shooting site is located a few kilometres from the Assembly complex.
DGP Kumar also ruled out an extortion angle in the case.
The investigation to identify and apprehend the assailants is ongoing.
