Roy Ravi Naik’s decision to vacate his seat in the Ponda Municipal Council has sparked fresh discussion over his political plans and the changing equations in Ponda and Marcaim.

Roy has tendered his resignation to the Ponda Municipality and the Directorate of Municipal Administration, bringing an end to his tenure as a municipal councillor.

The development assumes significance as Roy has, in recent days, spoken about his interest in contesting the Marcaim Assembly seat, a constituency previously represented by his father. His move has consequently fuelled speculation about whether he could seek a larger political role ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Roy’s political positioning also comes against the backdrop of the Ponda by-election, where his elder brother Ritesh Naik was selected as the BJP candidate before the poll was halted at the eleventh hour. Roy has continued to extend his support to the BJP.

In Marcaim, however, any attempt to alter the existing political balance is likely to face a strong challenge from MGP chief Sudin Dhavalikar, who remains a dominant political force in the constituency.

Political circles are also discussing the possibility of a broader BJP-Dhavalikar arrangement, with speculation that Mithil Dhavalikar could be considered for the BJP ticket in Marcaim, while Sudin Dhavalikar could potentially look towards Ponda.

With Roy now stepping away from municipal politics and openly expressing interest in Marcaim, his next political move is being closely watched. The developments could have a bearing on the BJP’s candidate strategy as the state moves towards the 2027 Assembly polls.
