The Mhadei issue once again triggered a heated debate in the Goa Assembly, with the Opposition accusing the “double-engine” BJP government of failing to effectively protect the state’s interests in the river diversion dispute.

Opposition MLAs questioned why the proposed joint inspection of the Kalasa-Banduri diversion project has still not taken place and alleged that the intervention of PRAWAH has so far yielded no tangible benefit for Goa. Questions were also raised over the functioning of the House committee constituted to examine the Mhadei issue.

The Opposition alleged that the Centre was advising Goa to withdraw its legal case over the Mhadei dispute, and demanded that the state government remain firm and continue its legal battle.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant rejected any suggestion of compromise, asserting that Goa will not withdraw its case regardless of who advises the state to do so.

Sawant said the government is serious about protecting Goa’s interests and will not permit environmental clearance for the Kalasa-Banduri Project. He said he, along with Water Resources Department officials, will meet PRAWAH to place Goa’s concerns before the authority.

The Chief Minister also said efforts are underway to conduct the joint inspection at the earliest, reiterating that the government will continue to fight to protect the Mhadei river and Goa’s water interests.
