Congress and the Goa Forward Party (GFP) have begun discussions, with both an alliance and a possible merger reportedly being considered, according to highly placed sources in both parties.

The developments come amid growing political speculation over GFP’s recently announced association with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Responding to a social media post criticising the AAP-GFP alliance, Goa Forward spokesperson Prashant Naik said, “I think your concern has reached its destination. Something positive will happen soon.”

GFP, meanwhile, has maintained that its position remains centred on its “Goa First” agenda and the creation of a united, secular alternative in the state. The party has said it remains committed to bringing together like-minded political forces and urged people to wait for an official communication instead of relying on speculation.

Senior Congress leader M K Sheikh has also indicated that the party remains open to GFP. Sheikh said GFP is already in alliance with Congress and that “not only doors but even windows” of the party are open for GFP president Vijai Sardesai.

Sheikh said Congress is awaiting Sardesai’s move and has extended a fresh invitation to GFP. Regarding AAP, he said any proposal for the party to join the alliance would have to be placed before Congress leaders for consideration.
