The possibility of a pre-poll alliance between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has come under fresh scrutiny, with the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee questioning AAP's intentions while the latter continues to maintain that it is open to an alliance.
Addressing the media on Monday, Goa Congress president Girish Chodankar alleged that AAP's actions were contradicting its public stand on opposition unity.
Chodankar claimed that AAP's Goa in-charge, Atishi, has been visiting Congress-held constituencies, particularly those represented by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao and MLA Altone D'Costa, to meet members of the minority community.
"If AAP is serious about an alliance, why is it targeting our constituencies?" Chodankar questioned, adding that any alliance can succeed only if there is mutual trust, respect and a willingness to make sacrifices.
Meanwhile, AAP Goa president Valmiki Naik reiterated that the party remains open to an alliance with the Congress.
Adding another dimension to the debate, Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai said that any decision on an alliance would have to be taken by senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and not by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao.
