The Directorate of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has intensified its special surveillance drive across Goa, shutting down two unlicensed home kitchens in Colvale and taking action against eateries and institutional canteens in Porvorim for various food safety violations.

According to an FDA officer, around six premises in Porvorim were inspected over the past two days as part of the ongoing drive covering canteens and institutional food establishments. A catering college mess was directed to shut down and was issued a notice to rectify structural non-compliances.

Several government institute canteens and eateries frequented by office staff were also inspected. The establishments were issued notices and given 14 days to rectify the deficiencies observed during the inspections.

In Colvale, two home kitchens preparing samosas were ordered to close. The FDA said the samosas were being supplied to different areas, including locations in front of schools. The premises were found to be operating without an FDA licence and under unhygienic conditions.

The surveillance also extended to bus stops, where an unlicensed vendor was found selling samosas. Although the samosa pattis used by the vendor were properly labelled, the vendor did not possess the required FDA licence. A spot fine of ₹5,000 was consequently imposed.

The FDA officer said checks on sweets and other food products are also continuing ahead of the festive season. Samples of sweets and mawa have been collected through surveillance activities, while paneer samples have also been taken amid increased demand for vegetarian food during Shravan.
