In a remarkable act of compassion amid profound grief, the family of 34-year-old Nikhil Nitin Bongale of Nipani consented to organ donation following his death, helping give a new lease of life to five critically ill patients awaiting transplants.
Nikhil was seriously injured in a road accident in Nipani on September 27, 2026. After receiving initial treatment, he was shifted to a hospital in Kolhapur, where he was subsequently declared brain-dead during treatment.
Following the family’s decision to donate his organs, Nikhil was shifted to Aster Aadhar Hospital in Kolhapur, where the organ donation and retrieval procedure was carried out.
The hospital played a key role in facilitating the organ donation process after the Bongale family gave their consent. The procedure enabled Nikhil’s organs to be donated for transplantation, benefiting five patients in critical need of organ transplants.
The decision was taken by the family despite their immense personal loss. Nikhil is survived by his wife and two young children — four-year-old daughter and four-month-old son.
The family’s decision has been hailed as an extraordinary act of courage and social responsibility, turning a devastating tragedy into hope for five other families.
The organ donation procedure at Aster Aadhar Hospital, Kolhapur, has once again highlighted the critical role hospitals and medical teams play in facilitating deceased organ donation and ensuring that a donor’s final gift can give others a chance at life.
