The Mumbai-Goa Highway expansion project continues to face severe delays and massive budget overruns. According to recent information obtained through an RTI application, the overall cost of the project has jumped by 48%, bringing the total expenditure so far to ₹16,909 crore. This marks an excess of nearly ₹5,500 crore over the originally approved budget of ₹11,409 crore.

A notable example of this cost inflation is the section between Parshuram Ghat and Aravalli. Initially allocated ₹983 crore, expenditure on this stretch alone surged by 126%, eventually reaching approximately ₹2,226 crore. Although work on the highway officially commenced in 2011, significant bottlenecks, primarily prolonged issues surrounding land acquisition, have repeatedly derailed progress.

Despite the heavy infusion of funds over sixteen years, the highway remains unfinished, causing ongoing frustration for commuters. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, recently expressed his deep disappointment over these endless delays during the inauguration of the Porvorim flyover.
