As Chavath approaches, a different kind of festive preparation is underway behind the walls of Colvale Central Jail.
Every year, inmates at the jail’s handicrafts section put their creativity and skills to work by crafting attractive Ganesh idols, which are then made available for sale ahead of the festival.
The initiative gives inmates an opportunity to showcase their artistic skills while keeping them engaged in productive work. What may appear to be an ordinary Ganesh idol carries a deeper story — one of creativity, patience and a chance to learn and contribute through their work.
The handicrafts section at Colvale Central Jail does not limit its work to Ganesh idols. Inmates also prepare a variety of decorative and utility items for different festivals throughout the year.
