The Goa Human Rights Commission has found no human rights violation in the process of installing smart electricity meters, allowing the rollout to continue. However, it has recommended that consumers be given proper notice before existing meters are replaced and called for greater public awareness about the technology.
Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar said smart meter installations had been temporarily halted on the instructions of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. He said the rollout would resume only after fresh discussions and emphasised the need to educate consumers about the technology and its benefits.
Dhavalikar also clarified that concerns related to smart meters and issues concerning sanctioned load were separate matters.
Meanwhile, Electricity Department Executive Engineer Kashinath Shetye said the department had informed the Goa Human Rights Commission that the installation of smart meters did not involve any violation of human rights. He stressed that Goa must embrace technological advancements and adopt the smart metering system.
