A new Mahila Resource Centre near Joggers Park in Chicalim is set to provide employment and skill-development opportunities to women in the Dabolim constituency, with the initiative targeting 100 beneficiaries in its first phase.
The centre was inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, along with the ‘Weaves of Goan Natives’ initiative promoting traditional Kunbi art.
Dabolim MLA and Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho said the Mahila Resource Centre was established as part of efforts to empower women and help them become financially independent.
Of the 100 women targeted in the first phase, 75 have already been engaged at the centre. The women will receive training in stitching and will be given orders to make school uniforms, children’s clothing and other garments.
As their skills improve and the volume of orders increases, the initiative will also create opportunities for women to work from home, allowing them to earn while managing household responsibilities.
Godinho said the centre follows a “no-profit, no-loss” model, with the primary objective being to create sustainable income opportunities for women rather than generate profits.
The shed and stitching machines for the centre have been provided with the support of CSR funding and Godinho’s personal contribution.
The initiative is expected to give women access to practical skills, regular work and an opportunity to build greater financial independence within their communities.
Godinho also announced plans for a larger shed aimed at empowering youth, in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The facility will focus on skill training and helping trained youth secure employment in hotels and companies.
