Mayem MLA Premendra Shet halted mineral transportation by Vedanta Iron and Steel Limited (VISL) at Pilgao-Sarmanas following complaints from local farmers and plantation owners. The locals highlighted that large amounts of dust and soil accumulating on the transport roads were washing into nearby agricultural fields during rains, causing severe crop and plantation damage.
Taking prompt action, MLA Shet visited the spot to assess the situation and discussed the issue with the affected farmers. He also called officials from the Mines to inspect the site and stressed on taking immediate measures to prevent further run-off and loss to the fields.
MLA also directed that mining transportation shall remain completely suspended until effective measures are implemented to protect the fields. This intervention has once again brought the ongoing conflict between local farmers and the mining company over environmental damage back into the spotlight.
