The Goa High Court has expressed concern over the growing number of litigations arising from extensions granted to government officials beyond the retirement age, observing that the issue has led to a substantial caseload before the Court.
While hearing a batch of petitions challenging government decisions to extend the service of officials beyond their retirement age, the Court questioned which government department had remained unaffected by the practice.
“There is a huge amount of litigation before us,” the Court observed, highlighting the need to examine the circumstances surrounding such extensions.
The Court further noted that each government department would have to be examined individually to assess the circumstances under which service extensions were granted.
During the hearing, the government counsel contended that granting extensions had been a widespread practice in the past but submitted that the practice had been curtailed in recent times.
The High Court has scheduled the matter for a detailed hearing on January 19, 2027.
