Goa Congress has raised serious concerns over the state’s road safety situation, citing data showing that Goa recorded more than 2,500 road accidents over the past year, with 132 deaths reported in the first half of 2026 alone.

The information was presented by Goa Congress leader Vijay Bhike at a press conference, where the party highlighted the scale of road accidents, fatalities and traffic violations across the state.

According to the data presented, Goa records around 260 to 270 road accident deaths annually, while two-wheeler riders and pillion passengers account for approximately 65% to 70% of all fatal mishaps.

The figures further indicate that the state witnesses an average of around 200 to 242 road crashes every month. North Goa accounts for approximately 96 to 110 crashes per month, while South Goa records around 104 to 140 cases.

The data presented by Bhike also points to specific areas facing higher risks. Pernem, Mapusa and Porvorim have reportedly recorded higher fatality rates in North Goa, while areas covered by the Margao, Ponda and Canacona traffic cells in South Goa have witnessed a higher frequency of property-damage accidents.

Traffic Fines Cross ₹355 Crore

Goa Congress also highlighted the sharp increase in traffic enforcement during the 2025–26 financial year. More than 1.29 lakh traffic violation cases were registered, generating approximately ₹355.17 crore in fines.

The increased enforcement has been linked to the deployment of AI-based and ITMS camera surveillance systems across major junctions to detect violations including overspeeding, wrong-side driving and mobile phone use while driving.

Bhike said the figures raise questions about road safety despite increased enforcement and called attention to the high proportion of fatalities involving two-wheelers.
