Goa’s mining revival could bring a fresh boost to cargo movement through Mormugao Port, with industry stakeholders expressing optimism over growing trade opportunities across multiple sectors.

Speaking during the Independence Day celebrations of Delta Ports Mormugao Terminal Private Limited, stakeholders said more than 10 mining blocks have been auctioned, with several mines already restarting operations.

The revival could generate a potential 10-million-tonne mining volume, creating fresh opportunities for cargo handling and coastal transportation. Stakeholders also highlighted the possibility of moving iron ore by sea to steel mills, reducing dependence on road and rail transportation.

Apart from mining, the terminal is also eyeing opportunities in fertiliser bagging, steel coil exports and limestone imports. Rising demand for pig iron from the US was also cited as a positive factor for the sector despite ongoing global geopolitical challenges.
