The Supreme Court has set aside a judgment of the High Court of Bombay at Goa concerning the selection process for the post of Coach (Grade IV) in weightlifting and has directed the High Court to hear and decide the matter afresh after impleading the competing candidate including the appellant Vaishnavi S. Ugadekar. The Supreme Court held that the High Court had passed its earlier order without impleading or hearing the appellant, Vaishnavi S. Ugadekar, even though she was one of only two candidates vying for the post. The dispute arose from a recruitment drive conducted by the State of Goa for the post of Coach (Grade IV) in weightlifting. During the selection process, concerns were raised about procedural fairness, prompting Ugadekar to lodge a formal complaint with the competent authority of the Goa State Government. Acting on her complaint, the state government authority ordered that the selection tests be conducted afresh. Aggrieved by the decision to order a retest, the rival candidate approached the High Court of Bombay at Goa by filing a petition. On June 23, 2025, the High Court decided the petition without making Ugadekar a party to the proceedings or giving her an opportunity to present her case. Challenging the High Court’s decision, Ugadekar approached the Supreme Court through a special leave petition. Setting aside the High Court’s ruling, the Supreme Court observed that “Considering that the appellant and respondent are the only two candidates competing for the post, we deem it appropriate to direct the High Court to decide the matter afresh after affording an opportunity of hearing to both parties.” The Supreme Court restored the writ petition to its original number and directed that Ugadekar be formally impleaded as a party before the High Court, which will then adjudicate the matter afresh on its merits. Advocate Salvador Santosh Rebello, along with Advocates Sneha Bhargava, Ankit Rana, and Devesh Khandelwal, represented the appellant.
