The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the State of Goa on a Special Leave Petition filed by former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal challenging the Bombay High Court at Goa’s August 6 judgment, which overturned his acquittal in the 2013 rape case and sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment.

A Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and P.B. Varale also issued notice to Tejpal on a separate appeal filed by the Goa government seeking enhancement of his sentence from 10 years to life imprisonment. The court directed, “Issue notice in both matters.”

The Bombay High Court had convicted Tejpal on August 6 and awarded him 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment, with the sentences for the offences to run concurrently
