The High Court has questioned the legality of advertisements mounted on electric poles along highways. The court is likely to examine a controversial agreement between the Electricity Department and a private contractor that allowed the contractor to use electric poles for displaying advertisements.
During the hearing on Monday in the related suo moto PIL, it was argued that the arrangement bypassed established highway regulations and specific legal prohibitions concerning roadside structures.
The High Court indicated that it would examine the legality of the agreement. The court observed that if a general order is passed requiring the strict application of highway laws, the contract could be declared illegal, potentially resolving the issue of advertisements on utility poles.
The matter has been scheduled for its next hearing on October 19.
