The High Court has directed the Chief Officer of the Mormugao Municipal Council to demolish an illegal shed constructed on Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) land at Headland, Sada, by August 28. The structure in question has been used by locals for over 15 years to celebrate the annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival under the name ‘Murgao Cha Raja’. To enforce compliance, the court has also instructed the Chief Officer to disconnect the electricity supply to the premises within three days.

This legal dispute originates from a March 28, 2011 High Court order that originally mandated the removal of the unauthorized construction on MPA's property. Although the Supreme Court upheld the ruling by dismissing a Special Leave Petition (SLP) on December 15, 2020, the structure remained standing. The matter escalated when the Chief Officer failed to follow through on a September 2025 commitment to complete the demolition within six weeks.

In response to the continued delay, the Mormugao Port Authority filed a fresh contempt petition before the High Court. Adjudicating on the petition, the court made it clear that failure to execute the demolition order by the specified date will require the Chief Officer to appear personally before the court on September 1.
