A controversy has erupted across Goa following the display of placards demanding the release of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. The incident has drawn contrasting reactions from legal experts in the state. While some view the gesture through the lens of democratic rights, others strongly condemn showing support for individuals arrested under serious charges.

Senior Advocate Nitin Sardesai stated that in a democratic setup, supporting anyone is acceptable, and advocating for the release of an jailed individual does not constitute a crime. On the other hand, Deputy Solicitor General of India Pravin Faldessai expressed a conflicting view, stating that displaying placards to demand the freedom of individuals arrested on sedition charges is completely wrong.

Following the appearance of a controversial placard at the Azad Maidan protest, Goa has seen a wave of demonstrations, intense debates on social media regarding nationalism, and political assertions that young people are being misled.
