Sitaram Dinkar Raul, originally from Ghotgewadi in Dodamarg taluka of Sindhudurg district, has brought recognition to Maharashtra by winning the ‘Category Winner’ title in the ‘Invertebrates’ category of the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year (WPY) competition.

Organised by London’s Natural History Museum, the international contest is regarded as one of the most prestigious platforms for wildlife photography. Raul’s photograph was selected from more than 65,000 entries submitted from across the world, marking a major milestone in his photographic career.

The award-winning image captures a scorpion digging into the desert sand to create a shelter. The photograph highlights the creature’s struggle to survive in a harsh environment and showcases the remarkable adaptations of even the smallest inhabitants of the natural world.

Rather than focusing on large and widely photographed animals, Raul’s work brings attention to an often-overlooked moment in the life of a tiny desert creature, demonstrating the beauty and complexity of nature at a microscopic scale.

Raul, who currently resides in Badlapur, has been active in photography for the past 14 years. His interests include wildlife, macro photography and creative nature photography. His work is distinguished by his ability to capture unusual natural moments, use light creatively and present familiar subjects from fresh visual perspectives.

A professional photographer with a keen interest in painting, Raul brings a strong artistic sensibility to his images. His understanding of colour, composition, lighting and visual expression has helped shape his distinctive style. He has previously received recognition at national and international levels, with the WPY category title emerging as one of the most significant achievements of his career.

Raul credits his journey to the encouragement of his family, fellow photographers and mentors. Guidance from his fine arts teacher, Suresh Bhosale, helped him develop a deeper understanding of artistic composition and visual storytelling. His close connection with the natural surroundings of Konkan and Badlapur has also played an important role in inspiring his work.

The international recognition is expected to draw greater attention to scorpions, insects and other invertebrates, along with the habitats on which they depend. These often-neglected organisms play important roles in maintaining ecological balance, making their conservation essential for protecting biodiversity.

Through his photography, Raul hopes to continue showcasing lesser-known aspects of the natural world and encouraging people to develop a greater appreciation for wildlife and the environment.
