A 63-year-old woman and her 27-year-old son were found dead in the Terekhol River near Rayacheped in Satarda, Sawantwadi, on Sunday. The mother and son, identified as Shrutika Shyamsundar Arondekar and Tukaram alias Suhas Shyamsundar Arondekar, had reportedly gone into the river on Saturday night.

The incident came to light after their slippers and a battery were found near the riverbank, around 300 metres from their home. The discovery prompted local residents and police from Goa and Sawantwadi to launch a search operation.

Sawantwadi Police Inspector Rajendra Magdum and Satarda outpost police personnel, including Nagnath Takkekar, rushed to the spot. The search initially involved boats, but the bodies could not be located as they were submerged deeper in the river.

Later, a local resident, identified as Raoul, searched the area using a fishing hook and managed to locate both bodies. The bodies were recovered from the river at around 4 pm on Sunday with the assistance of police and local residents.

According to local residents, the mother and son lived alone and had no other family members. Their bodies were subsequently shifted to Sawantwadi Sub-District Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Police have registered a case of accidental death at Sawantwadi Police Station. Preliminary suspicion points to financial stress allegedly linked to loans taken by Suhas through his mobile phone for online gaming. Police suspect mounting debt may have contributed to the incident, though the circumstances remain subject to investigation.
