Young youth leader Vishwesh Dessai participated in a cleaning drive covering a 600-metre stretch of the Zuari River at Shiroda, Karai.
During the drive, Dessai said he had earlier visited the spot for fishing when he noticed a large quantity of garbage floating in the river. The waste included plastic bottles, plastic bags, thermocol, discarded footwear and other materials.
“I came here one day for fishing and noticed a lot of garbage floating in the river. That is when I thought that something should be done to clean this place,” Dessai said.
He stressed the need for collective responsibility to protect the environment and keep local water bodies clean.
“If we have to clean our village, we also have to clean our river. Every single person should take an interest in keeping our land and rivers clean,” he said.
Dessai appealed to citizens to actively participate in cleanliness drives and work collectively to protect the Zuari River and its surrounding environment.
The initiative resulted in approximately 4,000 kg of waste being removed from the river, highlighting the scale of pollution and the need for sustained efforts to keep Goa’s waterways clean.
