Panaji Police have registered an FIR against around 1,000 unidentified persons for allegedly assembling unlawfully and holding a protest at Azad Maidan without obtaining prior permission.
The action was initiated following a complaint lodged by the Panaji Mamlatdar in connection with the gathering, which was organised in solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike and protest in Delhi.
Despite the FIR, a large number of youths gathered at Azad Maidan on Wednesday and demanded an apology from former BJP MP Narendra Sawaikar over his controversial remarks referring to protesters as "termites."
Addressing the gathering, several speakers criticised the BJP and alleged that those branding the youth as "termites" had "ruined and sold the country." They also warned that the youth would respond democratically in the next elections.
The protesters maintained that they were students from various educational institutions and asserted that their movement was aimed at protecting education and democratic rights.
