The Goa government has warned successful bidders of auctioned mineral blocks and mining dumps who have failed to initiate steps towards resuming operations. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has directed the Directorate of Mines and Geology (DMG) to identify such bidders and issue show-cause notices.

Speaking after a review meeting convened by the Mines and Geology Department, Sawant said bidders must fast-track the process of obtaining environmental clearances, forest clearances and other statutory permissions required to operationalise the blocks.

Of the 17 mineral blocks auctioned by the government, six have already commenced operations, while efforts are underway to restart another 7–8 blocks by December.

Appealing to people not to oppose mining, Sawant said the industry had the potential to generate employment and boost the state's revenue. He assured that mining activities would be carried out sustainably and that concerns raised by local communities would be addressed amicably. Local panchayats have also been asked to extend cooperation.

The Chief Minister further announced that the government would soon initiate auctions for six mining dumps. A proposal involving dumps located on government land is currently facing certain issues, which the government is attempting to resolve.

The review meeting, attended by around 90 per cent of mining leaseholders and dump holders, also discussed transportation-related issues. Sawant said the government was working to streamline mining transportation and that freight rates for truck owners would be increased.

Meanwhile, Goa will host a National Mining Conference on Thursday, with Union Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy and mining ministers from other states expected to participate in discussions on the mining sector and its development.
