Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday announced that Goa’s proposed third district will be called Kushavati, drawing its name from the river that passes through all four talukas planned to be included in the new district—Sanguem, Canacona, Quepem and Dharbandora. Explaining the choice, Sawant said the Kushavati river represents the region’s deep-rooted geographical history and cultural legacy, having influenced the ecology, livelihoods and way of life of the area for generations.
The Chief Minister confirmed that Quepem will function as the headquarters of the new district. He clarified that until the required administrative framework is fully established, the South Goa Collector will continue to oversee the administration of the four talukas on an interim basis. Addressing concerns over accessibility—particularly from Canacona and Dharbandora—Sawant assured that connectivity would be strengthened.
He announced the introduction of special bus services between Quepem and Canacona via the ghat route and said the government plans to upgrade and widen ghat roads to reduce travel time to around 30 minutes for Canacona residents. Sawant also revealed plans to develop a district road linking Dharbandora to Quepem, along with other targeted road infrastructure projects.
He added that the state would seek additional financial assistance from the Centre to support infrastructure development in the new district. Further, the Chief Minister said the proposed Kushavati district would be declared an Aspirational District, making it eligible for enhanced central funding. He noted that aspirational districts across the country have received approximately ₹15 crore each, primarily aimed at boosting infrastructure and overall development.
