Minister Subhash Phal Dessai has flagged illegal encroachments at the historic Chapora Fort, where local vendors have set up unauthorized ‘gaddas’ despite the site being a protected monument.

He said Rs 5.77 crore was earlier spent on building a pathway to the popular tourist site, but illegal activities are now hampering its upkeep. “We have to remove them,” he asserted.

The total cost for restoration and beautification is estimated at over Rs 4 crore, with approval from the Finance Department currently awaited. The Minister expressed hope that the work would begin within a month.

Phal Dessai added that the government will also seek approval to impose an entry fee at the fort to help generate revenue for maintenance.
