The proposed anti-conversion Bill has triggered a political storm in Goa, with the Opposition arguing that the state’s tradition of social harmony does not warrant a new law on religious conversion.
The Opposition said laws are already in place to prevent forced religious conversions and questioned the need for additional legislation.
Opposition leaders alleged that the proposed Bill was aimed at creating caste and community divisions ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, describing it as an attempt at identity-based politics.
The Opposition has made it clear that it will oppose the Bill when it is tabled in the Goa Legislative Assembly.
Interestingly, the proposed legislation has also drawn opposition from within the ruling camp, with BJP MLA Michael Lobo voicing his reservations over the Bill.
