The Margao First Class Magistrate Court has ordered the release of Francisco Dias, a suspect in the Rama Dnyanoba Suradkar murder case, based on a report submitted by Maina Curtorim police stating that Dias (43), a resident of Par-Suravali, had no involvement in the fatal assault on the victim.
According to Maina Curtorim police, on August 27 this year, a Bullet motorcycle was stolen from the Suravali area. On suspicion of involvement in the theft, a mob intercepted Rama Dnyanoba Suradkar, a resident of Osmanabad, Maharashtra, at Nuvem, interrogated him, and severely assaulted him. Suradkar was later admitted to South Goa District Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
Police initially registered a murder case against five named suspects and several unidentified individuals, and arrested Greson Fernandes (28), Domingo Fernandes (52), Francisco Dias, Vinayak Das (32), and Suresh Pujari (43).
After spending time in police and judicial custody, Francisco Dias filed a bail application in the Sessions Court, which was later rejected.
A follow-up investigation by Maina Curtorim police found no evidence of Francisco Dias’s involvement in the case. Subsequently, investigating officer Police Inspector Kapil Naik submitted this finding to the Margao court under Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), confirming the lack of evidence against Dias.
Based on the findings and submission of the investigating officer, the Margao JMFC Court ordered the release of Francisco Dias under Section 189 of the BNSS, without bail, as the evidence was insufficient to proceed with a trial.
On October 28, the High Court disposed of Francisco Dias’s bail petition as infructuous, noting that the JMFC court had already ordered his release.
