Tensions over alleged illegal sand extraction came to the fore in Maina-Curtorim after residents intercepted 10 trucks suspected of transporting sand illegally and handed them over to the police.

Locals claim that sand extraction in the area has continued for nearly two decades, with the activity reportedly taking place under the cover of darkness. According to residents, trucks begin moving sand after midnight and leave the area before sunrise.

Raising concerns over the impact on residential properties, local resident Brijida Montero alleged that the frequent movement of heavy vehicles along the narrow road has resulted in cracks developing in her house.

Residents further claimed that between 25 and 30 trucks transport sand from the area on a daily basis, raising concerns over the scale of the alleged activity.

They also expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of effective action despite repeated complaints to the police over the years.
