Fire hydrants installed at the South Goa Collectorate building have reportedly been found in a dilapidated condition, with none appearing to be functional, raising concerns over fire safety preparedness at an important government establishment.

The situation comes days after the Collector issued a series of fire safety advisories following the massive fire at Vasco Sunday Market. However, the condition of the fire hydrants within the Collectorate premises has raised questions about whether the administration is adequately equipped to respond to a fire emergency in its own building.

The issue has also brought renewed focus on fire safety infrastructure in government establishments, particularly in the aftermath of last year's Birch fire tragedy in Goa.

Deputy Collector Ramesh Gaonkar said a proposal seeking repairs to the fire hydrants had been forwarded to PWD Sub-Division X a few days ago.
